Editing ads from Liteon Recordings

I know most of this fits better in the Nero Recode forum, but it has often been asked how to edit Liteon recordings on a PC to remove ads, and a number of methods have been suggested, and I thought it would be good to share the following information. Thjis assumes the user has access to the Nero suiet of programs.

Nero Vision Express is one package that is good for this but it does tend to be quite slow (roughly one minute encoding per minute of program - depends on PC speed of course).

Nero Recode is much faster (say 20 mins) but only has limited editing capability. You can select a title and set start and end times. Selecting the same title several times, you can set start and end times of each section (i.e. parts between ads). Nero Recode does not produce menus, but this is not normally a big deal.

Nero Recode allows you to merge the individual VOB files together, but when you play it back, each title is still separate which is bit of a nuisance when fast forwarding through it using chapter marks, as the last chapter mark is rarely at the end of the title, and you normally have to use fast forward to get to the next title. I searched the web for ways of concatenating the titles to a single title, and found very little help here, but I was hopeful that the excellent IFOEDIT (freeware) program might help. In fact, the answer was so simple and it is also very quick as well (takes about 5 minutes!).

Imagine you have program on DVD with two sets of adverts.

1) With Nero Recode, use the Remake a DVD option and select the same title 3 times (number of adverts + 1)

2) Select 1st instance of title, and select from beginning of program to beginning of 1st adds using edit option.

3) Repeat for 2nd and 3rd section usinbg 2nd and 3rd copies of title.

4) Select all three edited titles and select button to merge them.
Nero Recode Users know this option is normally useless, as you simply end up with three titles in one set of VOB files (you will get more than one VOB file if greater than 1 GB but they are a set). However, this step is critical for later steps to work.

5) Re-encode in normal way to a hard disk directory.

Steps 1 to 5 take about 20 minutes once you have practiced it a couple of times.

Now comes the crafty bit (only takes 5 minutes)!

6) Go to the Video_TS directory and delete all IFO and BUP files

7) Now use IFOEDIT and simply select the Create IFOs option, and select the first VOB file ( normally VTS_01_1.VOB) and click ok.

There are combinations on how chapters are set up. The easiest is to select one program chain, and chapters per cell id. This does tend to give a lot of chapters, but you can quickly navigate through the file using the chapter forward on you remote. The other main option is to put a chapter at the beginning of a program chain (you have to select the multiple program chain option as well - each of the edited sections forms a separate program chain). This means effectively you only have chapters the ad breaks. Personally, I prefer to have too mmany rather than too little chapters.

The IFOs are re-written, and now all three titles are concatenated as a single title.

Now simply burn the files to a DVD in normal way using Nero.
