No no, greg didn't say pole dancing but "poll dancing" - you misunderstood him.

We definitely need a pussycat dancing around creating polls about this subject and that subject!

Regarding "off-topic", isn't it frowned upon to be on-topic in the Living Room for more than a post or two?

With an opening question of "When did you lose your optical viginity?", I thought it went quite well...

When you make a typo that can be understood in another (funny) way and someone makes a joke out of it, you are supposed to continue the joke - not deny it!

Poll dancing pussycats just seems funnier to me somehow than what you intended to write.

Re: Your first Optical Drive?

First CDROM drive was a Mitsumi FX001. I think I bought in 93/94

First Burner was a HP8100i, but when I discovered (within a week) that it haven’t had the capability to write more than 78.30 min. on a 80 min. media, I quickly replaced it with my beloved PlexWriter 4/12C. I’d say this was around 98.

If you had kept your HP CD-Writer 8100 for long enough, it eventually got some (unofficial) firmware that didn't have that limitation. I know this, because I upgraded three drives with that firmware.

Mine was also a Mitsumi. Can't remember the model name. I bought it in June 1993, five months before I joined the Republic of Korea Army. It had a caddie, of course. I bought it included in a package bundled with a stereo ISA sound card and some CD-ROM titles. Cost about US$350.

My first burner was a Teac 4x CD-R writer, the 56S. Since then, Panasonic, LG, Plextor, Yamaha, LiteOn... and very soon I was with over 20 optical drives at once.

Re: Your first Optical Drive?

First was an overpriced Creative that attached to a soundcard. Can't remember specifics of model and specs but think it was only 2x rated.

Apart from various other brands I pulled from 386 and 486 ex government machines bought at auction etc the Creative was the only early burner I bought new.

Maybe my first drive was a Creative made by Matsushita, not Mitsumi, same as yours. Must have been 2x.

Mine was a Matsushita too, SCSI 2x... immediately followed by a TEAC CDR-55S, which - woohoo! - was able to overburn CDs...

Re: Your first Optical Drive?

Mine was a HP 9110i CD-RW drive, after that I bougt a BTC 1004IM (this drive was the reason for me to sign up here ).

current drives in my sig.

and now I thinking about this one, € 32 for 18x +/-R and 12x RAM are darn cheap.

Re: Your first Optical Drive?

Hmmm .. first optical drive ... an Asus 34x (that's not a typo).

Second optical drive ... scsi Matsushita 4x CDR (not CDRW, just CDR) with 2MB buffer - no burn proof - just a lowly $450au / $380US / UK$150 .. and a scsi card
Worst POS in the known universe
The only burner *EVER* that blindwrite did not support

Yup! I remember it well: It was a hacked firmware based on a Sony firmware (CRX100). I actually helped a friend with flashing his drive.
I still don’t get, why HP never made an official firmware, though – Damn poor customer service if you ask me.
