Re: Pull Up A Chair.....

g'day mates....

yep .. a good old Aussie intro ... sort of like owyagoinmate ?

I have been into { literally } pc's since about 1980 .. before windows , used all that strange DOS stuff.... mind you , wouldn't want to go back to that !

have often looked up stuff in various cd freaks forums ... always been very helpful.

there are times I cud linger here all day just reading ... is gud stuff..

Re: Pull Up A Chair.....

First, I would like to say that I am glad that I was directed to this sight. One of my biggest joys and past times is to do photo editing, attempt to produce home movies and keep up with the new technology. When tech problems come up this really creates a lot of down time and getting answers to problems is not an easy task at times. I am thrilled to have a place to discuss computer issues.

Re: Pull Up A Chair.....

Good evening to you, ( or which ever greeting applies!),

As I'm new here I thought I'd take the time to pull up the chair.

I've been involved with PC's in various guises for best part of 30 years! I cut my teeth on the ZX spectrum and moved to the PC world over time. I well remember an older fellow consultant predicting, some 20 years ago, that PDA's and such things will never catch on and that I'd be better off with a Filofax rather than the Psion I was using to record data and appointments. He he - what a laugh. Wonder what he thinks now!

Currently I'm working in the digital graphics arena, with video and still images.

I run two pc's - the larger and faster one for video etc and the other for everything else!

I joined this site as I have recently come across an annoying irksome problem concerning DVD video burning and the way programs handle the files.

I've had a look through the forums but can't find where best to post my question - so that would be a useful answer to have.

Kind regards,

Chriscb.

My name is Albert. [Bet most of you didn't see that coming, unless you paid attention to my sig]. Typically called Al only by my family [although some of my friends are calling me that]. Other aliases are AlEd, Al-B, Albz, Eddie, Edward, Alberto, Al-bit, and Albertonka.

I'm 17 [July birthday]. Last year of high school, gonna be 17 all the way through [while most of my friends will be 18]. Major crusher once I find someone to crush on, typically nice, and typically passive. [Occassionally passive aggressive.] I'm probably one of the few people that live where I live to like Japanese music and the culture, but dislike anime, etc, and NOT have any Asian heritage at all.

Tryin' to head up to New York for college--want to go to Columbia U.--for a double major. Possible majors are Middle Eastern/Asian Studies, Mathematics, Teaching, Computer Engineer, & [for the safe job] accounting. I love math and electronics, although science isn't too terribly far behind. Love to add new stuff to my computer and figure out how stuff works with my computer.

Often, I am a great troubleshooter, but oftentimes I can be totally off track in my thinking. I am far from a blonde, but I have plenty of moments that you could call blonde.

One odd thing about me: I have U.S. size 16 shoes, equivalent to a size 52 Birkenstock. I get it from my dad, although mine are larger, oddly enough.

& as long as no one takes me outside of my comfort zone, I usually want to stay in one place for a long time. But when my comfort is even potentially comprimised, such as by asking a personal question, I am more than ready to go someplace else until my shields are back up.

Oh, and, my favorite brand is Sony. [Anyone who has seen me post scans knows that I use a nice amount of Sony media]. My desktop is a Sony product, my speakers are Sony...most things in my room are Sony. [Been on the Sony kick since about '94, when I first saw all the "cool stuff" they had to offer. I was only 4 then, but still...]

Wallace0134 has been my main screenname for the longest time. It stands for My last name + being thirteen + looking forward to '04. I was about 12 or 11 when I made it, though, and recently I have started using Wallace162x11 [or 172x11]. [Age I couldn't wait to be or am + when 4th year of college is scheduled to begin if all goes according to plan.]

.... that's me.
Re: Undergraduate major.

Hi, Albert,

I'm a former executive (CFO/COO/CEO) and was a scientist (major computer manufacturer--long before PC's) before getting my MBA. I've, also, been a grad B-School professor off and on since Sept 1968. I've been on the faculties of 4 major (northeast) universities and a member of seven different (subject area) departments -- no doubt, a record of some kind.

Anyway, should you get this note, I have some specific suggestions regarding your proposed major(s) and subsequent studies as well as career. First, since you're contemplating a math major at Columbia, I assume that your Math SAT is around 800. If that's so, I'd suggest (strongly) that you immediately join MENSA (it's a breeze). Doing so will help "distinguish" your resume now and later in business life.

As to major, I'd suggest mathematics and economics (which, btw, is what I did for my u-grad) OR engineering and math (which I WISH that I had done) OR mathematical physics. All of this is predicated upon your express decision-basis choices. NOW, and this is CRITICAL take a course in financial accounting, one in cost accounting, and one in tax accounting. DO NOT take the idiotic, managerial accounting or whatever it's termed at wherever you end-up. It's a make-believe course taught by folk who seldom know a damn thing.

With any of these major study combinations, you'd be in excellent shape to get a job with McKinsey (Booze, Allen; BCG; etc.) or any of the large accounting firms. After 2-5 years experience STOP your career and get an MBA in finance. If you find that you like the field a LOT, consider going immediately into a PhD program in mathematical finance. Should you NOT be profoundly turned-on by finance, you'd have your pick of jobs upon graduation anyway! (When I completed my MBA, I only interviewed with 5 firms, but, I received job offers from 27 firms. This is a bullet-proof path.) Make sure that you graduate in the top 5-10% ... just become a monk and you'll reap the dividends for the rest of your life!

The resultant two-part career path will, initially, get you quickly into the $75 to $125K range (particularly because of the tax accounting). Going back for the MBA try for MIT, Harvard, Chicago (I'd pick that order, but, it's hard to beat the networking value of HBS). Post-MBA, you'll likely go into executive staff assignments for C-level executives which is a great way to learn and become known. The next (very soon) step would be to take an upper-level non-executive job. Alternatively, you could, "write your own ticket" at an I-bank. The "bidding" there would probably start (with bonuses in today dollars) at around $250K and climb VERY quickly.

I would strongly urge you to learn a second European language and an Asian one. Were I to be doing it, now, I guess I'd opt for Russian and Mandarin Chinese. I would NOT take anything other than the requisite minimum to meet your baccalaureate distribution, because you can always learn on your own (that's what I did/do). Of course, if you're "just aces" with languages, knock yourself out! Your goal is to make sure that your GPA is maxed.

If you want to save the world, whales, whatever, forget everything that I've said. My advice: Makes tons of money and decide who YOU want to help. Worked for me; I'm 62 and retired at 41 ... life is good.

Best of luck,
Jim

Re: Pull Up A Chair.....

Hi, All,

I'm new to the forum, but have been accessing CD Freaks info for some time.

I'm retired from a long career as a music director, and have a good background in audio recording. I'm involved as a performer in choral and instrumental activities. I will be teaching a voice class in 2008. I'm becoming quite active in the areas of high school sports videography, wedding videography, analogue to digital media restoration , and have moderate computer skills.

My family (wife of 50 years, 3 adult children with spouses, and 15 grandchildren), and church are priorities in my life. People of all ages and backgrounds and relationships are important to me.

I look forward as a forum participant to a helpful and creative exchange of information.

Incidentally, all of us are probably freaks at some time about somethings. That can refer to both intensity of favorite activities, as well as creative off-the-wall thoughts and expression of them.

Hello! I just joined up. Thought I should, as I'm always reading through topics and finding out how to do things I didn't know how to.

My name is Renae, I'm 20, and female. Session9 is a movie I like, just because I couldn't think of anything else and my real name was taken.

I love music, cult movies, my keyboard and my laptop.
Not sure what else, so hi! Again.
