KDE's a nice wm, but in all honesty it's a bigger resource hog than win32 is. I keep the console up most of the time because I learned my basics of DOS in the 80s using "Norton Commander" which mc (running in the bash console) is entirely based on. And it sure beats typing

all the time...

That's exactly the way to do it - use an old PC or old HD and then migrate functionality across one app at a time. One day you might yourself spending more time on the 'nix side than the win32 side.

I would suggest starting out with the Mandrake (now "Mandriva") or SuSE distros. Debian seems to be falling behind and Fedora expects you to know a thing or two about window managers.

Another thing to try is the "live" distros like Knoppix or Gentoo. They come on a bootable CD with all the apps pre-installed and you don't have to do anything to any hard drives, either. Zeb's "pxlinux" has recently appeared as a Gentoo package

i've booted into knoppix on my newer machines before...a little rough around the edges, but definitely far from "hard to use"...

i just need to wait to retire one of my HDDs back into the old machine...disk space is just to precious to me these days

I saw those guys in '73 (Dark Side tour with Waters) and in 1993 (Division Bell without Waters). You haven't really seen a concert unless you've seen a Floyd concert and it was great to see them on stage one more time last week. The only album I'm missing (had it on vinyl) is Atom Heart Mother.

i wish i had been able to see them in the mid-to-late '70's at their best...but nevertheless felt very lucky to have seen them in '93 at Giants Stadium/Meadowlands during the DBell tour as well...

i completely agree...i believe the '93 show was my first stadium/BigAct concert and everything since then has been somewhat of a dissapointment...no enigmatic references (publius), no huge pigs/boars, 1/10 airplanes flying in to the stage, that huge disco ball...hope they collaborate on some new work and/or tour again...

i was actually quite moved watching the Live8 performance...
