First off, I'll say it again [since it's been 7 hours]: Merry Christmas, all of you all across the Ocean!!!

Hehe. The sad part is I had to save all the boxes for when I needed to take the drives back out. [On average, 6 months after they went in the computer.]

LOL. I just hope that it doesn't die or give me any SMART warnings. I went through too much trouble getting my twisted combination of HP's QuickPlay, 3 partitions, and Vista to boot properly--let alone copy to the WD in the first place. [In the end, I ditched the QuickPlay partition. But now I've got some space to...err....download music. ]

Not yet. I can't find a good time to make a backup, because I always have some important program in beta at one time or another. I did keep the original HDD for the laptop [which works flawlessly right now], and have [some sort of] OS backup for the desktop, though.

When FireFox exits beta and the OS's get the official service packs [and they get tested], I'll back up the main partitions for each system. I'll just have to be careful for a few months.

You see, the laptop is pretty much a mirror for the desktop. The internal drive houses OS, programs, and music/music videos. The external drive houses my pictures, all the stuff I've downloaded, and a small backup of the music [what hasn't been written to DVDs]. The only difference is in recoverable pictures, and TV recordings, which if I cared I'd author to DVD Video.

So, to sum it up:

Laptop=250 GB + 250 GB [int+ext]= 500 GB [40 or 50% used]
Deskto=200 GB + 320 GB [Samsung + Seagate]=520 GB [50 to 65% used]
The 20 GB difference is negligible, thanks to the TV shows taking up just a tad more space. If one crashes, I can still function.

None. Whether that's good or bad, I don't know.

The only benefit I'd get is start-up time, and that's pretty fast right now [when I don't hibernate]. I just spread the workload out between partitions/drives, disable Windows' prefetch and superfetch, enable write caching, and everything goes plenty fast.

Not bad at all! I use Raid 3 and 4. The 400GB backsup my whole other 400GB automatically should one die on me my other will have the same image. I am going to be upgrading to 1TB drives soon here for my space is about 40% free.

I plan to go get a 750 GB drive and backup my whole desktop to it, unplug it, and set it aside for Instant Recovery, should anything go awry. I plan to get 2 or 3 additional drives to help even more. I want the paging file on a drive that's rarely used [like the drive where I'd store pictures], TV recordings on one drive [where a 750 GB would come in handy], OS and apps on one drive [shared as cache for photo and video editing], and 1 drive to be shared between duplicates of my music [iTunes and WMP each have their own libraries, with MP3s and such that get changed independently] and programs/updates that I dowload.

I might also go for a 320 GB HDD for the 2nd bay in my laptop, since I'd see the benefit of having swap file & music on one drive, OS and apps on the other. [That's how my single drive is partitioned now, minus the fact that the PF is the first file on the first partition].

This is my Christmas gift to all 'Freaks that enjoy technological talk. Merry Christmas to the next time zone!
