Major power outage hits New York, other major cities

NEW YORK (CNN) -- A major power outage simultaneously struck several large cities in the United States and Canada late Thursday afternoon.

Cities affected include New York; Boston, Massachusetts; Cleveland, Ohio; Detroit, Michigan; Toronto, Ontario; and Ottawa, Ontario. The power outage occurred shortly after 4 p.m.

Much of Midtown Manhattan and Wall Street were shut down, including all area airports and the Long Island Railroad. The airports were operating on back-up power and operations were reported to be normal, officials said.

The New York City Police Department said they were trying to determine what happened. A Con Edison transformer on East 14th Street in Manhattan was afire, CNN learned.

Thousands of people could be seen leaving buildings and walking into the streets. New York subways were reported stopped and people were trapped in the cars.

Cool, well maybe not for those in the subway but at least it was good weather outside

Best of all:

Maybe they need to cut down on the Burgerking and McDonalds?

Edit: Just saw the news (yes they even aired it here as "breaking news", quite silly) whoa that's alot of people up and about. Makes me wonder even more what would have happened if it would have been raining
And I doubt we'll see our NYC correspondent, FlyingD, for a couple of hours. Report when you get online FD

Last Wednesday we had a power failure too, 2 neighbouring villages and large part of my own city was without power for nearly 4 hours....we were sent home because of it (and just when we heard we could go home, the power came back on...still went home though )

But that I didn't see on CNN.....here it was a cat in a power distributing unit...

What do American CDFreaks think?
Oh- wait - they can't log on.
Mwah ha haaa.
Apparently this is going to happen to UK this winter though.

I liked the story about people being able to see the stars in Manhattan.

I live in ontario, and i just got my power back.
We lost power at 4:15pm yesterday.
i missed CSI and ER last night
I was "REALLY" annoyed because when it happened i was across the city (a mere 20 feet away from cinnibon ) and had the take the busses home, through downtown rush hour traffic with no traffic lights. (it look 3 hours and it usually takes 1.)
We don't know if the power will stay on though. (the govenment has been talking about "rolling" the power)

Also, 50 million people actually were affected. (It wasn't an exaggeration)
From what i have heard, some people in the US don't even have water, and some people are under a boil water alert.

Hehe, yeah missing ER can really make you mad
Last winter there were people without power for a week in the countryside, now that's hard.

26 hours 25 minutes without electricity. This is the darkest I have seen my city ever. It was literally like a carnival! Stores giving away food rather than seeing it spoil, people getting rid of their meat through block BBQ's. I met so many people who suddenly felt like brothers through lack of electricity.

Its amazing how little one values electricity until one loses it. No TV, no computer, reading by candlelight and cooling yourself off with paper fans. Even though I at one point had no water and it became like an oven, I met really cool people and ate way too many ribs.

Once again, New York City rocks! It was all worth it in the end plus now I have the right to say to my fellow New York "brothers": Where were you when the lights went out?

Blame Canada! Blame Canada!

New York Gov. George Pataki said about 8 p.m. that power had been restored to virtually every customer in New York City.

Yea, I got mine back around 7. My friend in the Chelsea neighborhood got his closer to 8. This is one of those times when you ask yourself, how did they manage to live a hundred years ago without electrical cooling?
