Kudos to pipemanid .

That's a hell of a "week off". As many pictures as you can manage would be most welcome... .

Actually, I only knew about the US meaning of 'suspenders', but thank you for showing me the much more interesting UK version (garters).

Next time I try to make a clever word-play, I'll try to wear both a belt and suspenders.

Oh, and one more thing imkidd57:
If you *are* wearing suspenders (the UK type), please don't post any pictures of it in here...

Hehe... .

Back on-topic again:

Curiosity led me to this page of crazy mountain-bikers who rush down 'The Road Of Death' for fun. When not talking about themselves and how fast they're going, some of the observations on the regular course of events are fairly sobering.

I've already driven in lots of places like that ... although I've noticed in recent years that there seem to be alot less red cars wedged under trees over the side ......
I suspect it's too much to hope that selective breeding has reduced the number of red car owning individuals flying over the side .. and it's more a matter of the government installing barriers to prevent costs incurred by hauling the cars back onto the road & out to the nearest 1 horse town.

I hadn't driven up Dorrigo mountain for a few years, and I'd wondered if they ever put speed limits on that 1/2 lane goat track. The last few times I drove up there, logging trucks came flying around corners at over 70Km/hr. Not bad for a weaving, unsealed, 1/2 lane - 2 way goat track without barriers & a 1/2 kilometer drop on the side

Unfortunately, about 3 months ago I went for a drive up the road & now it's tar most of the way No more pretty red cars littering the mountain side.
Looked pretty .. added to the scenary .. with the red-flowering flame trees in bloom.

Re: I really want to drive here

Thanks for the pictures Airhead. I've saved them all. I traveled a similar road in Pero about 40 years ago. This one ran from Cerro de Pasco on the altiplano to somewhere around Pucallpa in the jungle. I hitched a ride with a trucker. I was young and fearless. I don't remember being afraid, just overawed with the scenery.

I remember the driver offering me some "lechuga". I knew enough Spanish to know lechuga meant lettuce, and I figured it wasn't lettuce. I didn't know about coca leaves at the time, but I politely refused his offer on general principles. I guess it worked for him though, because I'm still here.

Like an earlier poster I got altitude sickness when I was on the altiplano. I didn't know what the heck I was suffering from until I finally got hooked up with a physician. I figured it had to be a bad disease though because I had every symptom known to man

Peru is an awesome place. I took the train from Lima to Cerro de Pasco. What a ride! They used steam locomotives then.

My destination was the Peruvian jungle but I was so sick I decided to stay in Cerro de Pasco until I got better. After several days in a local hotel on the town square, someone at the hotel told me he summoned medical help.

My room overlooked the town square, and I saw an ambulance pull up, and two fellows wearing white lab coats got out. By now I was feeling much better and I was embarrassed. I apologized to the two who came to get me. They assured me it wasn't a problem. This was routine for them. So they took me to some american medical center associated with the copper mine. That's the first I knew about the mine. Great service though! Sure beats the hell out of the service I get in the USA. I don't think they even charged me.

An oxygen mask, two giant syringes filled with atrapine, and a quick trip to the jungle (elevation 2000 feet), cured what ailed me.
