"Canberra residents brace as fires approach
Canberra residents are stepping up preparation for an approaching fire front.

Fires in the Namadgi National Park to the west of Canberra broke containment lines overnight and strong west north-westerly winds combined with temperatures up to 40 degrees are pushing the blaze towards the capital.

Major roads in and around Canberra are being closed.

The ACT's chief fire officer, Peter Lucas-Smith says the fire is less than ten kilometres from Canberra with rural properties between the fire front and city at greatest risk.

"We're really into property protection at this stage, we're not trying to combat the front of the fire," he said.

"It's very dynamic in it's growth as the weather conditions are pushing along it's very much a weather driven fire and we need to wait until such time as those conditions abate before we can be effective in any direct fire control.""

These fires have caused servere damage to houses and infastructure with around 400 houses destroyed and 4 people dead.

I do not know where Futureproof lives but I hope that it is not in the worst affected areas.

See http://www.esb.act.gov.au/media/bushfire.htm for more info, or PM me and I will try to find out futher details for you

I would just like to point out that I am from Canberra

Keep it safe!!!

Really sorry about all the fires down your way. Here in Upstate New York. We just had a storm that dumped 7 inches of snow an hour. 40 inches all together, then the winds came. Blew it all sideways, it would get right in your pockets. Still that is NOTHING to what you have there. You folks have lost loved ones and your homes. With fire theres nothing left, photos, keep sakes, etc... all gone... damn, thats just to hard to even think about.
I know that a fair amount of members here are from down under, You All Take care!!!!

Fires

Sorry to hear these sad news; yesterday the news in Italy spoke about the worst fires ever seen in Australia at 10 kilometres from Canberra....

Damn global warming....

We had huge fires in the West last year. Some were natural but some were not. A forrest ranger burned a letter sent to her by her boyfriend and the letter managed to ignite one of the largest forrest fires in that regions history. Like Smokey the bear used to say: Only you can prevent forrest fires.

Being from Canberra ,and still living in it at the momet. its good to see that some of the people that come here are from the area and seem to be safe from the fires that we have had over the weekend. I know a few that have lost everything from the fires and a few that had close calls as well. Lets all hope and pray that these fires get put out soon.

Also where I work I have been speking with a few of the firefighters that are helping to attamt to put these out as well and it seem that the ANZAC spirit is still going strong as we have now also got some NZ firefighters in as well!

Umm the NZ Firefighters are helping out in the Victorian Alps, not here in Canberra. Though for some people (like me), it was fortunatly a null event. Hopefully though only good can come from this tradgety

I sympathize with you folks getting fires. We have quite a few fires here in New Mexico each year. A few years back an out-of-control "controlled burn" spread and almost destroyed the town of Los Alamos. Many people were homeless as a result. Fire can destroy not only life but lives too.

I hope they get them under control quickly.

The fires in the North East of Victoria are quite bad at the moment. Apparently two of the larger fires have joined together unfortunatly.

Its ironic (IMO), theres basically a drought and those huge helicopters (The huge orange ones, think ones called 'Elvis') use up to 9,000 litres of water per trip (Saw this on the news). But at least they are helping.

My condolances to those who have lost and my hopes to those who havent so nothing else shall be lost.
