Yepp.... You have to hav a mod-chip. Why you say?

Original PSX games have a region code in the disk, like DVD movies do. When you copy a game, the region code doesn't copy. A mod-chip simply injects the region code while the copy is booting and voila! the game boots. Without a modchip = no code = no play!

Hey dudes, don't forget that if you have an older psx unit, you also have the option of using a Game Enhancer type cartrige. Only difference is that you have to use an original(any game) to boot, and then when the motor stops, swap your copy and press start. Generaly you can use Gameshark(R) codes too, as it's basicly the same device, but with slightly different programing.

Just check the back of your PSX to see if this is an option for you. If you have a scph-9xxx you're out of luck, cause Sony eliminated the port on this model. Older Models(scph-1xxx,5xxx, & 7xxx all have the port.)

Some people don't like having to swap discs, but if you don't know how to solder or can't find someone reilable to do it for you, this is your best option as it is truely plug and play!

Game Enhancer totally suck if you don't have any original disk's.. Hehehe...

BTW, you can get both game enhancers and modchiips at modchip.com !!!

What if you are using bleem! or similar programs to run backed up psx cd's?
Do they have a chip in 'software' or will they not run at all?

bleem doesn't have built in protection against copies, but the connectix virtual game station does. you can get a patch for VGS that will allow to play copies.

i personally like VGS better, because it's a little faster than bleem!. but - i have a modchipped psx, so i really don't need these slow emulators.
