In case anyone's interested: Problem solved.

The external USB recorder (Plextor PX-712UF) didn't like the Verbatim DVD-Rs I used extensively for testing. It eats ANYTHING else, however (other manufacturers, DVD+Rs, etc.).

You can file that under "Murphy's law".
