Microsoft on Friday set late 2006 as the deadline when it will ship Longhorn, the next major version of Windows.
But to make that date, it had to delay the full implementation of WinFS, an ambitious file system geared at letting users search through all of their files at once.
Whether Microsoft makes this latest deadline will likely be one of the dominant issues for the tech industry over the next two years. The operating system was originally expected in 2004, and many have predicted that further delays could dampen PC sales.

Microsoft revamps its plans for Longhorn
Microsoft is shaking up its plans for the next version of Windows to get the software off the drawing board and into PCs by the end of 2006.
As expected, the company on Friday announced a new road map for Longhorn, its revision to Windows XP. The changes--removing some features and altering others--are designed to let the company have a test version of the software next year and a final release for desktops and notebooks by 2006. A server release is planned for 2007.

So not only will Longhorn be 2 years late it will have some of it features removed to get it out "On-Time".
