How to make a back-up image and disc of DOOM 3:
-------------------------------------------------
After much experimenting and reading what the other members have already tried, I was finally successful in making not only a working image file, but also a working disc copy.
I purchased the game on the day of release, and I love it so much that I really wanted to keep the $60 discs safe and not have to be putting in disc 1 everytime I want to play the game. So here's what I did:
Software: Alcohol 120% v1.9.2 (Build 1705) for Read & Write.
Reading: Safedisc 2/3 Profile with 4x Speed selected, .mds file format. Drive is a crappy basic DVD-ROM.
Writing: Used the .mds image file I created, Safedisc 2/3 profile, 4x Speed Selected. Disc was an old 4x CD-RW I had lying around. Drive is a crappy Mad-Dog 52x24x52 I bought for $30.
I had tried this same configuration but with "Maximum" set as the read speed before, but it never worked. It would always fizzle-out part way through the read process. The only thing I changed to make it work was the speed - it MUST be 4x Speed ONLY, for read AND write, then it works like a charm.
I really only wanted a working image to use with the Alcohol Virtual Drive, and when I got that to work, I thought I'd try and make an actual backup disc as an experiment, seeing as how that's what everyone seems to be interested in here.
So there you have it. Easy when you know how.
Simon.
