When you mux it back with virtualdub you still have to select an audio CBR? So you're still restricted to those common bitrates (128, 160, 192, etc) ?

Where abouts in Goldwave is the option to re-do the bitrate? Can you specify precise bitrates then? Stuff like 157.1?
