107D DVD Region Free Question

Hi all,

I understand that there are two "layers" of region protection; the first being hardware-related (DVD recorder) and the second being software-related (OS and DVD player software).

After flashing my Pioneer 107D with AnyDVD or the likes) before I insert my original DVD movie. Movie plays fine without any problems. Now, while the movie is playing (or the DVD inserted for that matter), I browse to my 107D drive properties under System in the Control Panel, and tells me that I have "1" change left until the drive is permanently region-locked. I fire up Nero Infotools and it correctly tells me that my drive is still RC-1 (region free).

Ok, now, I remove the DVD, close Region Free software, and check the drive properties again (under Control Panel, System) and it still tells me that I've got 1 region change left.

So basically, my question is, is the purpose of region free software (like the Region Killer, AnyDVD etc etc) to allow the user to play region protected DVD movies even though the Windows may eventually be "region-locked"? So as long as the drive (107D) is region free, the use of the said region free software will bypass Windows' region protection?

Thanks.
