I understand the objections to your proposal, and fault-finding to your rationale--but I'll try it before ignoring it!
I've certainly seen sillier WinDoze approaches work for unintentional/mysterious reasons. I'll try this on a couple longer/already-copied movies and compare results tonight/tomorrow.
