usually it is the audio stream encoded to VBR MP3 that causes problems joining .avi files.

Load your 1st movie in Virtual Dub and direct stream copy the video, and full process the audio, compressing it to PCM, then save that video file. Do the same for the other parts you wish to join.

Now got to File and select the 1st part of the movie which has the PCM encoded audio and open it. Set both Video and Audio to direct stream copy. Go to File and select Append AVI Segment, and select the 2nd part of your movie with PCM audio.
Save as... and save.

if the file joined OK, load the joined file in VD, direct stream copy the video, and full process the Audio, and compress to MP3 at whatever bitrate you would like (this can be done in the Append Segment step, but I prefer to encode the audio in a seperate step to help avoid audio/video sych issues)
