"Canberra residents brace as fires approach
Canberra residents are stepping up preparation for an approaching fire front.
Fires in the Namadgi National Park to the west of Canberra broke containment lines overnight and strong west north-westerly winds combined with temperatures up to 40 degrees are pushing the blaze towards the capital.
Major roads in and around Canberra are being closed.
The ACT's chief fire officer, Peter Lucas-Smith says the fire is less than ten kilometres from Canberra with rural properties between the fire front and city at greatest risk.
"We're really into property protection at this stage, we're not trying to combat the front of the fire," he said.
"It's very dynamic in it's growth as the weather conditions are pushing along it's very much a weather driven fire and we need to wait until such time as those conditions abate before we can be effective in any direct fire control.""
These fires have caused servere damage to houses and infastructure with around 400 houses destroyed and 4 people dead.
I do not know where Futureproof lives but I hope that it is not in the worst affected areas.
