In addition to Troy's suggestion to post a burn log from Img....if you have any from VSO where it looks like something actually burned, please post these as well.
The default location is:
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator Name\My Documents\DVDFab\Log
Are these failed "blank discs" really blank? You should still be able to use them if they're truly blank. If not, try to open the discs with IsoBuster and see what you've got.
Are the ripped files on your hdd intact? Are you able to view the movies with a software player such as VLC,
Powerdvd,
Nero showtime?
If the performance of your burner is in question, you might consider running some tests with nero cd-dvd speed, such as the standard tests (benchmark), create a disc; and on burned discs, run a quality scan.

xfactor4u, as you said, firmware for this drive seems to be a bit more than just elusive...as in non-existent. I recall trying to chase this down once before and found this:
