Is there a specific reason as to why you are using Burning Rom?

I'd use nero express if it's just data or music you want to place on a dvd. You should have it show up in Start> All Programs> Nero> Nero Express. Then select data and click data dvd. Add files and burn.

If for what ever reason you need to use burning rom with a dvd, just open Nero Burning rom, on the New Compilation option, the top left has a drop down box that says either CD or DVD. Set it to whichever you need it to be.
