If you are having issues with sp3, then I would reccomend slipstreaming it into the appropriate xp version and running it as a repair disk

I am having to do several versions for my work on client computers

RTM is what's shipping to all the major manufacturers

as an upgrade it's testy, as a clean install I would suspect it to be well tested
