G'day GB & Hutch. Welcome to the forums.
@GB - WinXP recognises an many drives as you have Drive letters (A->Z) and certainly detects more than 3 optical drives. I've had 3 optical drives installed, 3xHDD's installed at any point in time -> with two USB optical drives & 1x Portable USB/firewire HDD.

Check your hardware -> if it's IDE, check that your jumpers are set correctly, if there is only one device it should be master, and at the end of the IDE cable.
Check that the IDE controller has been correctly detected & drivers installed.
