I know what you mean Womble they all have fancy graphic display that show nice lines of green with no red when finished.
I've stuck with Paragon HD Manager 2008. They give you an ISO of a WinPE boot version that shows how poor the others might be. I've tried, paid for and used O&O v.10, and Perfect Disk 8.0 and TBH they're not great.
With Paragon HDM under PE you can defragment and compact the MFT, then defragment. First one I've truely felt a speed increase with; or at least a lack of chattering from the sys disk. I don't know how the others try to do it with having the system disk still mounted. Half the time with O&O the off-line defrag never kicked in
