***WARNING: Not the shortest post!*** a single UNDERspeeding test
Test subject: Verbatim 16x DVD-R @ 2x
Code:
MID: MCC 03RG20
Country of Origin: Taiwan, by CMC Magnetics [MAP6...]
Drive used: LiteOn LH-20A1P crossflashed to LiteOn DH-20A4P
Firmware: 9PV1 Test Firmware, version A, enhanced with FBL and EOHT 6 by C0deKing
Settings of: [OHT=enabled]; [HT=enabled]; [SmartBurn=enabled]; [OverSpeed=disabled]
Software used: ImgBurn 2.4
Mode: Image Build Mode, direct to device
A few settings: [Perform OPC before burn = enabled]; [Buffer = 256 MB]; [Chosen write speed: 2x]
Disc's intended purpose: data backup
Comments:
- Burn: The drive issued an Optimum Power Calibration error at the beginning of the burn. This is often the case with underspeeding. With this app, I was able to retry. Other programs may not be so receptive, and may create a coaster.
- Disc Quality: About equivalent to what one could expect when using media meant for archival [ex: MAM-E or MAM-A archival media using TDK's media codes]. However, the disc performs much better at high speeds, with 1,500 less PIF, and much better PIE and jitter.
- Surface Scan [ScanDisc]: Both drives reported that all files are okay. Not much here.
- TA Jitter: Lands and Pits don't appear to be formed correctly, as is reflected in the high jitter in the DQ. No real change between zones.
- TRT: I decided to use just the Pioneer for TRT, as the LiteOn is fairly robust, and pretty much does a good job with any complex discs. Seems there is an issue not picked up in the surface scan. Other discs TRT fine.
