I have got some Verbatim DVD-R disks now, but I have not yet had time to experiment, and am not sure if I should until I have sorted this firmware problem you are describing.

I have no idea about 'IDE' or anything, the drive is built in to my PC and I know little about it. When I try to use the firmware update (from either source - they are the same) I get the message as shown by this graphic:
