Hey.
I've just tried again with DVDFabHDDecrypter on Linux. I've posted a bunch regarding RipIt4Me and now
DVDFab over at:
http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?t=13836&start=60
I'm Eck over there.
My current setup is Wine 0.9.50 and the latest DVDFabHDDecrytpter 4016 Beta on OpenSUSE 10.3. I'm using NVidia Beta 169.04 drivers and XServer 1.4 and Xorg 7.3 from the Xorg 7.4 private home: Build Service repo, along with the latest KDE and Gnome, Compiz Fusion, Multimedia:/Audio for Alsa, etc from the Build Service.
I've recently encountered a problem with Wine where I must rename /usr/lib/wine/winealsadrv.so to winealsadrv.so.old and run with OSS checked in winecfg as the audio driver, which I guess using the alsa-oss wrapper as the audio in Wine programs is working. With that winealsadrv.so existing, Wine stuff just errors out including wineprefixcreate and winecfg. The Wine folks feel it's an Alsa bug so I reported it to Novell's bugzilla as they recommended.
Now, to DVDFab! I have now successfully ripped and burned (with K3b) two encrypted dvd's using DVDFabHDDecrypter! Nice.
One problem I have is the options window does not do anything when I click the various sections on the left. The window just stays on the current dvd information. I cannot change any settings this way. I have turned off Compiz Fusion and just use Kwin so it's not compositing interfering. The mouse clicks on the headings just have no effect.
After the installation of the program and wineboot, and then rebooting the computer, things looked okay and I proceeded to rip the first movie.
When I was done and had burned the movie, for some reason my two Windows partitions had been unmounted. Once I restarted the computer again they were back. This is similar to how when months ago I had tried DVDFab it had made my cd drives non-dma and K3b had destroyed one of my multisession cdr's when I had it burn more files to it. Somehow DVDFab gets involved in the Linux file system more than programs like DVDDecrypter, RipIt4Me, and
DVDShrink do. Things were fine when I restarted the computer, just like now.
When I did my next rip, all was well following the rip. All I needed to do was wineboot so I could simulate a Windows restart and clear DVDFab out of memory. It had not tinkered with my drives. Perhaps the tinkering with stuff is only done during the initial installation or first run. That's cool since we shouldn't need to restart the computer or logout and in all the time after running DVDFab. But after the first use, yeah, things are somewhat messed up.
I have experimented with turning off auto-run and turning it on and that does not seem to have any effect upon DVDFab. It worked either way. I don't have a selection made automatically and just hit open the folder to view files. I had tried Do Nothing, but that resulted in the mounted DVD not being detected by DVDFab. Only opening the DVD in Konqueror first enabled DVDFab to see the disc, even though on OpenSUSE the DVD is mounted automatically by udev. I have libdvdcss2 installed, but it didn't interfere this time.
My previous attempt months ago was on Debian Lenny, which does not mount the dvd unless I either have KDE's auto-run do it or I mount it myself. At that time, I could only get the green pixalated bad rips of encrypted dvd's using DVDFabHDDecrypter. I have no idea if the current versions of Wine and DVDFab now work on Debian, but I think the folks on the Debian forum thread I linked to are now trying it out again.
Right now for me, it appears that accessing the DVD by opening it in Konqueror actually helps the process. And the great difference is it is now working!
I hope the problem with the settings window can be solved. I don't have that problem in DVDShrink so it's not as if I can't click things with the mouse and have them open. It's only in DVDFabHDDecrypter that the problem has occured for me. I tried double clicking the links, single clicking, right clicking, but none of the sections open and the main settings window just stays open to the current dvd's information. I also tried it without a dvd in the drive with the same problem happening.
It's exciting that things are looking better and better now for DVDFab in Wine and Linux! Hopefully we can get the remaining difficulties dealt with.
Currently, I haven't even installed DVD ripping software onto my Windows partitions as I had been using RipIt4Me on my Linux distro and that work around (that's me that contributed that to the WineHQ RipIt4Me appdb listing). Heh, I even got an honorable mention for it on the myguides how-to article.
But the future is in DVDFab. I'm going to purchase it, probably next month as I'm broke now and also want to check out if it continues to work through version upgrades of Wine and DVDFab. I believe in supporting folks who contribute nice programs and packages that help make computing a pleasant experience. That's why I bought OpenSUSE 10.3 and even paid for a Mandriva Powerpack subscription after only trying out the One cd. I just was impressed enough to want to help further the work. I have no employment, being a live in caregiver for Mom, so that's kind of why I'm broke right now, and most of the time actually. But I spend a lot of time at my computer and just like to help out when I can. I do have to pick my spots carefully though. Hopefully, the Platinum version's extra features will work properly as well. Not all of them, but the shrinking and burning stuff would be nice since they make the whole process one step.
Thanks for the improvements in a great program that I've been looking to use for a long time now. Finally, it appears to do its job in Wine albeit with a few minor hiccups we'll get fixed, hopefully.
