Clone DVD does not copy copy protected DVD's unless you have a decryptor loaded that disables copy proyection such as ANYDVD or DVDfab etc...
It sounds like your freind either has an invalid or expired anydvd key.

Once you have a decryptor running in the background you can use nero, copydvd2 or easy cd creator etc.. to make your copies.
