This is "normal".
1-2 years ago I did a lot of experimenting, ripping with dvdd and AnyDVD and burning with dvdd and Img.
As I recall, in I/O settings...for OS win 98 se and previous, you had to set it to Elaborate Bytes.
For XP, it shouldn't matter, ie., I had mine set to both (EB and SPTI), but primarily to SPTI (microsoft) and it worked great for many, many burns.
Not sure about win 2000.
