Hey that's great....congrats!
As far as the firmware, well that all depends. Firmware updates can add capabililities such as DL burning, bitsetting, faster burn speeds, etc. and most often enhance blank media compatibility. They can also fix bugs.
While it makes sense to stay current, I wouldn't blindly update everytime an update is available.
I would update when you want or need a specific change.
Here's where one of my favorite expressions comes in...

The point here is that if you misflash your burner and it's not official firmware, your warranty is void. Always best to go through your manufacturer unless your comfortable with flashing.
You could end up with a very expensive paperweight...
