Hi Jbrizzel and welcome to the forum
You do not have to set the booktype but it does make the disc more compatible with more DVDPlayers some do not read the +R type disc and this helps, also if you are having trouble with your Backup copies try reducing your burn speed down in common settings-->write this may help
you can also get better results by using Verbatim brand blank disc
