Yep, ALSA issue needs to be resolved since it has become the defacto standard for Linux. Another way around this is you might try is to have OSS emulation for ALSA activated in your kernel.
I'm downloading the beta now of Nero and will take it for a spin. If the released product supports FLAC I'll be buying it. I never could get the earlier Nero to work with FLAC, so it was a waste of $$$$. I currently use Gnomebaker and Bashburn.
Keeping my fingers crossed, back in my M$ days I loved Nero.
