Mack pretty much said it all. I'm pretty sure your burner is an oem Benq 1640. With the right firmware and media, it should have no problems with DLs.
I would check into the firmware, but before doing anything very drastic, give the Verb +R DLs a try. The fact that the SL memorex burned ok, really has no relation to the sony DLs failing.
