As signals said, error 400 covers a multitude of sins. Unfortunately, I don't own scanners either.
Have you tried main movie mode?
Just a thought, but in "common settings" > "Read" > try unchecking "Enable read-ahead cache". I'm pretty certain it's enabled as a default setting. You may also want to try "Ignore all reading errors automatically".

btw, you may want to consider alternative food sources...
