Hi
I had this same issue with my Pioneer 109 DVD burner. The drive couldnt read CD or DVD's. The autoload on a CD/DVD would bring up errors when loaded into the machine. It would sit there and flash its little light at me. Trying to burn a DVD or CD would end up with a coaster almost straight away.
After looking at firmware and reinstalling
Nero etc, I decided to unplug my old samsung DVD ROM from the PC, and presto the Pioneer worked perfectly. I have just bought a 2nd Burner the cost between a DVD ROM drive and DVD-RW was negligible not to get the burner and they both work fine.
Same cables same install of Windows XP. Some kind of incompatibility....
