no need for apology! in a perfect world everyone would have the time and patience to advance their knowledge in a variety of fileds including video editing
in the real world, the simple products do so well because people don't have the time or patience for learning such an involved program.
besides, i think the progression is important. you start by experimenting with a program that's your level...you know it's time to move on when you start wanting to do things that your program is incapable of.
if premiere was the first editing program i ever experimented with, I probably would have given up. it's not an easy program!
(plus it helps i that i majored in tv/film and had to use FCP for routine homework assignments...i really wish i had taken avid classes while I was in college though.)
