My opinion is that, if you want quality audio ripping, you should use eac even if it means not using your 1640. When eac reports there were no errors, you can guarantee that their will be no pops, clicks or jitter. If there is a problem reading the disk, eac will give you a list of the possible bad spots and will let you play just the few seconds around the possible error to see if the error is noticeable or not so you never have to listen to the whole file just to check for possible errors.
