To start with, your burnings errors are not related to your 1625 drive. Most probably your setup and burning software/media causing this.

I have a similar compu (home network server, even older box), having no problem to burn CD's (at 48x) and DVD's at 8x.
Your box is running under a lot of (memory) load, old slow HDD and not the best burning software for your needs.

My suggestion:
- Get new (80 conductor) IDE cables
- Move your HDD's to primary IDE channel, WD drive as "C" because this is your fastest HDD (Maxtor is only ATA-33).
- Put 1625 as master on secondary IDE channel.
- Reinstall windoze from scratch and load only the progz you really need, get latest Nero 6.x.x.x full version.

Depending on your other hardware/setup this might give you problemfree 8x, maybe 12x DVD burns and full speed on CD's.
