Taiyo Yuden DVD-r 16x are good, so is Sony. Never heard of Ascent. Don't use off brand or cheapo media.

Use CloneDVD's speed feature to burn at 4X.

Turn off AntiVirus software.

Dont multitask or cruise the web while backingup.
