xine and mplayer do and have worked for a long time with encrypted dvds. you need libdvdcss.
dvdbackup can get the main feature or mirro the dvd to you drive.

.When I want to shrink and put say 2 movies on a dvd then I use DVD (lavc) keeos it looking really well at 1.4gig up and still mpeg format and 720x480(576) ac3 audio 48000 etc . then dvdtyler

can be a pain sometimes . just putting in the right key words ubuntu has a pretty goos wiki site with list of link apps too . Some it doesn't have but its a good start( I don't use ubuntu but that doesn't matter)
