In response to your specific question concerning the Plextor 712A I would visit the CD Freaks Plextor Forum (http://club.cdfreaks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=43) and do a little searching there.

There are some very talented firmware modifiers that frequent the CD Freaks DVD Burner Forum and you can find various firmwares that optimizer the full potential of particular DVD Burners.
